About us

Biology of Aquatic Resources Lab.

We research on the development, genetic breeding and ecology of aquatic invertebrates, mainly bivalves, with the aim of increasing the efficiency and sustainability of aquatic resources and reducing the damage caused by aquatic invasive species to primary industries. Our current research themes include: 1) development of breeding techniques and analysis of pearl quality and crystal microstructure in the pearl oyster, 2) development and reproductive strategies of the Corbicula clams, and 3) feeding ecology of marine bivalves and small crustaceans.

Aquatic Molecular Ecology Lab.

We research on vertebrates such as fish, reptiles and mammals, as well as molluscs, with the aim of "exploring the mysteries and history (adaptation and evolution) of biological diversity (ecology, morphology and behaviour) from DNA information". The main research themes currently being addressed are: 1) elucidation of biological evolution and adaptation patterns, 2) elucidation of the mechanisms of successful establishment of non-native species, 3) collection of knowledge for the protection of rare species, and 4) development of breeding techniques using molecular information.

Two laboratories operate jointly

Aquatic Resource Biology and Aquatic Molecular Ecology were originally one laboratory and continue to share student rooms, laboratories and experimental equipment even now. Although the research subjects and themes are different, we share the same experimental and analytical methods, and we cooperate in the management of the laboratory, including student guidance.
